“That they may have life, life in abundance….” (Holy Bible)
It’s my great pleasure and privilege to serve as Director of Sumanahalli Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Center (LRTC) in Bengaluru.
For decades ago, the people who convinced our society about the need for an LRTC named it SUMANAHALLI, which means “Village of people of good heart”. Today, it has become a reality, where people could find love, life and light. We had our moments of joy and sorrows, struggles and anxieties. Yet we delight at what we are today.
Sumanahalli’s objective is to cater to the welfare and rehabilitation of person affected with Leprosy, HIV and Person with Disabilities, without the distinction of colour, caste, creed or religion.
Sumanahalli is involved in all the activities related to Leprosy such as Early Detection of Case, IEC (Information, Education, Communication), MDT (Multi Drug Therapy), Advocacy, Capacity building and Training , and POID (Prevention of Impairment and Deformity), Vocational training, Institutional Based and Community Based Rehabilitation for the person Affected by Leprosy and Persons with disability. The NLEP (National Leprosy Eradication Program) & CBR (Community Based Rehabilitation) program have 75 corporation wards of Bangalore city with 2.13 million target population.
Sumanahalli has become the Social Hub of Bengaluru. The original Vision of the Maharaja of Mysore and that of Chief Minister Devaraj Urs was realised with the place becoming a centre of refuge for the most unwanted people in the society. Most marginalized have shelter in the campus those affected by leprosy, HIV and disabilities, the orphans, the street boys and the juvenile delinquents. Many of them would have ended up becoming beggars on the road. (The Empty Nest, by Rev, Dr. Fr. George Kannanthanam).
For the past 40 years, the Sumanahalli Leprosy Project is working for the Eradication of the Leprosy and Rehabilitation of leprosy patients in 76 wards of Bengalure City Corporation and 5 leprosy colonies by conducting various activities in different levels. In these areas, the organisation has very good rapport with the people. We are a society with five clinics, a hundred-bed rehabilitation centre for leprosy patients and an ongoing survey that has covered one-fourth of Bengaluru. For our beneficiary we have developed a comprehensive rehabilitation program consisting of education, vocational training, job placement, housing and community marriages through which we are able to send them back to the society as persons with dignity.
Ours services have been acknowledged and appreciated globally. 181 international volunteers from 17 countries, 11 National awards and 7 state awards are a witness to this. Our hearts are filled with gratitude to God and to His human instruments, which walked with us, with appreciation and support. My Sincere appreciation and thanks to all who partnered with Sumanahalli and its projects.
I pray and wish God’s blessing to all who are walking with us. Let us continue the journey, to make life a little better for those who have no one to care for, so that they may have LIFE, LOVE AND LIGHT.
