Leprosy rehabilitation program at sumanahalli

Sumanahalli society for the welfare of the leprosy affected persons, witnessed a special rehabilitation programme on the 20th of April, 2009.

Manjunath, who was treated, trained and given job by the Sumanahalli society was married off to Ms. Radha, in the presence of Dr. Ajai Kumar Singh, DGP & IGP, Karnataka. He garlanded both of them at the wedding solemnized in the Sumanahalli campus. Manjunath works at the Bowring Hospital since two years.

Shri Das Suryawamshi, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, gave away tricycles to the disabled. Dr. Uttam Chand Khincha of the Daya Shanthi Charitable Trust gave certificates for the training in working with the disabled to the nursing students.

Fr. George Kannanthanam, the Director of the Sumanahalli society welcomed the audience and said that the society was working for 30 years for the treatment and rehabilitation of persons affected by leprosy and disabilities. Fr. Joseph Thoompanal thanked the gathering.

Though tens of its illustrious men and women were recognized for their meritorious and outstanding service, it was only in 2003 that the institution itself was conferred the National Award. The Award was for the Best Employer category for employing the maximum number of disabled persons in the institution. Out of the total staff count of 83, 52 persons are disabled. They are engaged in office and outreach work, as well as production, cultivation and security staff.

The Award was received by Father George Kannathanam, the Director of Sumanahalli, on the 3rd of December, in a function at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, from the President of India, Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
