Sumanahalli

Sumanahalli, being a project of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, is under the chairmanship of His Excellency the Archbishop of Bangalore. This endeavour would not have been possible without the dedication of our partner congregations:

  • * The St. Joseph's of Tarbes (SJT)
  • * The Franciscan Sisters of The Immaculate (FSI)
  • * The Daughters of Wisdom (DW)
  • * The Daughters of The Church (FDCH)
  • * The Claretians (CMF)

In addition, several other congregations have been actively involved in our project. The Precious Blood Fathers contributed immensely by building the Ave Maria Block for Leprosy patients. We gratefully thank The Montfort Fathers as well as the Holy Spirit Sisters, without whose participation we could not have accomplished this much over thu years!

1993 Mehboob- Most Efficient Handicapped Employee
1993 Mehboob- Most Efficient Handicapped Employee

Affected by leprosy when he was 15, Mehboob had to leave his native Bidar and come to Bangalore. Since he could not get a job, he had to beg for a living, and married a girl who also was a beggar. The police arrested them and brought them to Sumanahalli for treatment and rehabilitation. He worked in the gardens there and was most happy planting trees. Today, he is very happy to see those trees having grown big. Being uneducated, he joined our adult literacy class to learn to read and write. Sumanahalli placed him at NIMHANS where his relationship with his fellow employees was very good. His productivity was as good as that of his non-handicapped colleagues. Mehboob received his award for being Most Efficient Handicapped Employee on World Disabled Day in 1993.
