SumanahalliSumanahalli had its beginnings in 1978. It all started with a request by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka State to the Archbishop of Bangalore, offering Government land to establish an organisation that would help treat and rehabilitate the Leprosy-afflicted in and around Bangalore.

Several benevolent and caring individuals and organisations took up the challenge to create and nurture this fledgeling Society. In the course of time, it would go on to accomplish major advances in the treatment and prevention of the dreaded disease of Leprosy. Today, Sumanahalli stands tall as an example of what collaborative activity and voluntary participation can accomplish. And not just for those afflicted by Leprosy but also HIV, the disabled and the destitute.

Though tens of its illustrious men and women were recognized for their meritorious and outstanding service, it was only in 2003 that the institution itself was conferred the National Award. The Award was for the Best Employer category for employing the maximum number of disabled persons in the institution. Out of the total staff count of 83, 52 persons are disabled. They are engaged in office and outreach work, as well as production, cultivation and security staff.

The Award was received by Father George Kannathanam, the Director of Sumanahalli, on the 3rd of December, in a function at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, from the President of India, Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
